With a larger roster, it's much harder for players to develop an understanding or connection to a character. Not only does this help them find their ideal fighter, but it also adds more depth to the character. This allows for each fighter to have a spotlight and for players to learn their stories. Since Mortal Kombat is also a reboot of the franchise, it acts as a fresh start for players narratively.
